Climate Change & Environmental Sustainability

CODEWA’s Climate Change initiatives focus on promoting environmental sustainability, restoring degraded ecosystems, and empowering communities to adopt climate-smart practices. Through targeted programs such as the Climate Action Initiative and Go Green Project, CODEWA combines reforestation, environmental education, and hands-on learning to address deforestation, climate change, and environmental degradation in Tabora Region. These initiatives also integrate community engagement, youth empowerment, and practical life skills development to ensure sustainable impact.

Problems the Projects Address

  • Deforestation in tobacco-growing regions: Tobacco curing requires large quantities of wood, leading to extensive tree cutting and forest degradation.

  • Limited environmental awareness: Many community members, particularly youth, lack understanding of sustainable practices and the importance of tree planting.

  • Disconnect from nature in schools: Schools often lack practical learning opportunities to teach children about ecology, sustainability, and nutrition.

  • Nutritional and health challenges: Communities face high rates of anemia and stunting, which can be addressed through improved access to fruits and vegetables from school gardens.

  • Limited community engagement: Lack of local participation and ownership in environmental initiatives reduces long-term sustainability.

Project Goals

  • Climate Action Initiative: To restore forests, increase biodiversity, and promote sustainable farming practices among tobacco farmers in Tabora.

  • Go Green Project: To create a sustainable educational environment that empowers students and teachers to become environmental stewards while promoting nutrition and life skills.

Project Objectives

Climate Action Initiative:

  1. Establish and manage tree nurseries to grow indigenous saplings for reforestation.

  2. Distribute  saplings to tobacco farmers and other local communities.

  3. Conduct training and awareness programs for farmers on sustainable farming, tree planting, and environmental stewardship.

  4. Promote community ownership and participation by integrating small farmer contributions to nursery maintenance.

Go Green Project:

  1. Establish interactive school gardens and plant fruit trees, vegetables, and flowers to enhance biodiversity and hands-on learning.

  2. Form and train a Green School Club to lead environmental awareness campaigns in schools and communities.

  3. Integrate environmental education and sustainability practices into the school curriculum.

  4. Promote healthy eating and nutrition by providing access to fresh produce for students and the community.

  5. Engage the community and neighboring schools through farm field schools, knowledge sharing, and collaborative activities.

Project Description

  • Climate Action Initiative: Focused on reducing deforestation caused by tobacco farming, the initiative establishes nurseries, distributes tree saplings, and educates farmers on sustainable land use. CODEWA has grown and distributed saplings, directly benefiting thousands of farmers while promoting climate-smart agriculture.

  • The Go Green project, a seeks to establish a transformative school garden and fruit tree planting initiative that is fostering environmental awareness, sustainable practices, and nutrition through hands-on learning and community engagement and serves as a hub for eco-gardening education for young people.

Both projects demonstrate how practical interventions, education, and local participation can drive sustainable environmental change while empowering youth and communities.

Expected Outcomes

Climate Action Initiative:

  • Increased forest cover and biodiversity in tobacco-growing communities.

  • Improved knowledge and adoption of sustainable farming practices among farmers.

  • Long-term community ownership of reforestation and environmental initiatives.

  • Reduction in the environmental impact of tobacco farming.

Go Green Project:

  • Students gain practical skills in gardening, nutrition, and sustainable practices.

  • Increased environmental awareness and stewardship among students and teachers.

  • Improved nutrition and healthier lifestyles for students through access to fresh produce.

  • Strengthened school-community partnerships and collaboration for sustainability.

  • Youth become ambassadors for environmental conservation in the wider community.
