Material Aid Was Not Enough.
So We Went Deeper.

In 2018, CODEWA's research with Dr. Pierre Rialland (University of Essex, UNIDO) confirmed what our teachers had seen for years: the deepest barriers to education were invisible. Trauma. Low self-esteem. The internalised belief that success was for other people. Supplies alone could not fix that. Mentorship could.

The invisible barriers we dismantle

🧠
Internalised Poverty
The belief that success is for other people, not children like me
🏷
Gender Stereotypes
Harmful norms that limit girls' academic ambition before they even try

The Methodology

Two Formats. One Mission. From Barriers to Breakthroughs.

CODEWA delivers mentorship through two complementary programmes designed to meet youth where they are: Resilience Circles for sustained one-on-one support, and Inspiration Seminars for large-scale mindset transformation. Together they create a complete psychological ecosystem around the child.

Format 01
Monthly. Personal. Sustained.

Resilience Circles

A Resilience Circle is a small group of 8 to 15 vulnerable students who meet monthly with a trained mentor. The mentor is not a teacher and not a parent. They are someone who came from the same difficult starting point and built a different life. That proximity to a real role model is the catalyst that no textbook can replicate.

Each session uses a structured curriculum that moves through four stages: creating safety, dismantling limiting beliefs, building aspiration, and committing to action. Over twelve months, students develop a relationship with their own potential that endures long after the mentor leaves the room.

Monthly sessions across a full academic year
Sustained contact builds the deep trust that one-off interventions cannot create
Aspiration Action Plans for every participant
Each student leaves every session with a specific written commitment to one action they will take before the next meeting
Pre and post surveys to track mindset change
75% of participants report a measurable increase in belief in their own potential after one year
Remote mentoring options available
International mentors can lead sessions via video call, removing geography as a barrier to contribution

Large-Scale. High-Energy. Transformational.

Inspiration Seminars

An Inspiration Seminar brings 100 to 500 students into one room with successful professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders who grew up in circumstances just like theirs. For many students, this is the first time they have ever met someone who looks like them and achieved what they dream of achieving. That moment of recognition is irreversible.

Each seminar follows a structured five-stage format: opening with a challenge to students' limiting beliefs, sharing authentic personal stories of failure and recovery, interactive goal-setting exercises, community commitment pledges, and a closing action plan. Students leave changed.

100 to 500 students per seminar
High-energy, high-impact events that create a collective shift in what a school community believes is possible
Role models from the same background
Speakers chosen for shared background with students, not just achievement, because proximity to possibility is what creates belief
Structured Aspiration Action Plans
Every student leaves with a written plan linking their dreams to specific next steps they can take within the week
+42% academic improvement documented
Verified through school record comparison in the academic term following each seminar

The Four Shifts

What Changes Inside a Student

🧠

Mindset Transformation

Replacing "I cannot" with "I have not yet." Students discover that their intelligence is not fixed and their circumstances are not their ceiling.

⚖️

Leadership and Values

Integrity, responsibility, and the understanding that true leadership begins with character. Students learn that how you treat others is the first measure of success.

🔭

Career Exposure

Connecting students with professionals from medicine, law, technology, and business who share their background. Making distant dreams feel achievable through visible proof.

🚫

Breaking Beliefs

Actively dismantling the gender and class stereotypes that limit ambition before a student ever raises their hand in class. Equity is not just a value. It is a curriculum.

Evidence of Transformation

From Research to Realized Dreams.

The Mentorship and Inspiration Seminars programme did not begin with a plan. It began with a child who stopped coming to school despite having everything she needed. That child changed CODEWA forever.

The Strategic Pivot

2016 to 2018  ·  The Discovery

The Invisible Barrier Is Identified

Research with Dr. Pierre Rialland (University of Essex, UNIDO) confirmed that trauma and low self-esteem were blocking student potential more powerfully than material poverty. A child named Zara, who had everything CODEWA could give, stopped attending class because she did not believe she deserved to succeed.

2018  ·  The Pivot  ·  Key Moment

Mentorship and Inspiration Seminars Launched

CODEWA pivoted from material aid only to a holistic model addressing the psychology of aspiration. Resilience Circles and large-scale Inspiration Seminars were launched, placing role models from the same communities at the heart of the mission. The missing link between supplies and success was finally in place.

2020  ·  Scaling

Role Models Enter Schools at National Scale

As academic improvement and school retention data confirmed the model worked, demand from partner schools and institutions grew rapidly. CODEWA scaled seminars to reach over 160,000 youth, with a documented +42% academic improvement among participants.

2025  ·  Milestone Year

First Mentored Students Graduate as University Leaders

Four CODEWA beneficiaries from the first mentorship cohort are now in their second year of Bachelor's degree programmes. They are the first in their families to reach university. Mentorship creates lifelong economic resilience.

The Moment That Changed Everything

"I know you believe in me. But I do not believe in myself. So none of it feels real."

Zara, CODEWA Beneficiary

Zara's words in 2018 revealed the invisible barrier no school kit could address. They launched an entire programme.
