Hassan was one of the strongest students in his class. Then malaria stopped him for three weeks. His family could not afford the clinic fee. By the end of term, he was no longer the student his teacher had described. A EUR 25 health card would have prevented all of it.
Two shields. Two health barriers removed.

The Health Shield
A child who is sick cannot learn. A family who cannot afford the clinic cannot send a sick child to school. A girl without supplies stays home rather than face the classroom with shame. The Health Shield breaks both cycles at the source before they become dropouts.

EUR 25 protects one child for 365 days
The Toto Afya CardThe Toto Afya Card is Tanzania's Community Health Fund card. For EUR 25 per year, it gives one vulnerable child access to doctor consultations, prescription medicine, and routine checkups for an entire year. When malaria strikes, there is no impossible decision between the clinic fee and dinner. The card covers it. Every Toto Afya Card is paired with a community health literacy workshop, teaching families how to prevent cholera, recognise early signs of malaria, and practise safe hygiene at home. Because the most powerful medicine is knowledge, and knowledge is free.
✓
Doctor consultations and prescriptions
Year-round access to medical treatment at enrolled facilities, with no out-of-pocket clinic fee for the family
✓
Malaria, cholera and routine illness covered
The most common causes of school dropout due to illness are covered, turning a potential permanent absence into a one-day clinic visit
✓
Community health literacy paired with every card
WASH education, nutrition awareness, and disease prevention training delivered to families alongside each enrolment
Hassan's Return
"Hassan is back in school. He received a Toto Afya Card at the start of the following term. In October, his teacher told us he had moved back to the front of the class." That is what EUR 25 can do. Not just treat a fever. Restore a future. |

Shield 02
60 school days reclaimed per girl
MHM Dignity KitsIn many communities across Tabora, menstruation is shrouded in silence. Cultural taboo, combined with the inability to afford sanitary supplies, forces adolescent girls to miss up to 5 days of school every month 60 days a year. That is a full third of the school year, lost to a barrier that a dignity kit can remove entirely. CODEWA's MHM programme distributes quality menstrual hygiene kits and delivers safe-space reproductive health education in partner schools. Girls learn to manage their health with confidence and dignity, supported by teachers who have also been trained to create classrooms where no girl feels ashamed.
✓
Quality menstrual hygiene kits

✓
Safe-space reproductive health education

✓
Teacher sensitisation training
Equipping school staff to create supportive environments where girls feel safe, seen, and ready to learn
✓
1,200+ kits already distributed
Across 15 partner schools in Tabora, with girls reporting significantly higher confidence and classroom participation

What Protection Looks Like in Practice 🩹 Illness Treated in a Day, Not a Dropout in a Term
Children enrolled in the Toto Afya Scheme attend school at a 95% rate, far above the national average. When they fall ill, the card covers the clinic visit. They return to class within days, not weeks.
🌹 Girls Attend Every Class, Every Week
Girls with MHM kits attend every class, every week, confident and prepared. No longer defined by a biological cycle they could not afford to manage. 60 school days reclaimed per girl per year.
📖 Families Prevent Before They Treat
Health literacy workshops teach families to recognise early signs of malaria, practise safe hygiene, and manage nutrition. Prevention reduces clinic visits, reduces missed school days, and builds lifelong community health resilience.
🌟 Hassan Moved Back to the Front of the Class
After receiving a Toto Afya Card at the start of the following term, Hassan returned to school. By October, his teacher reported he had moved back to the front of the class. That is what EUR 25 can do.
