Empowering Young Women to Stay Safe Online: CODEWA Hosts Focus Group Discussion on Social Media and GBV
Understanding the Double-Edged Role of Technology
During the discussion, participants examined how social media can both protect and endanger users. They reflected on:
- How digital platforms can expose young women to online harassment, exploitation, and cyber-violence
- How misinformation and harmful content can perpetuate GBV
- The growing influence of social media in shaping attitudes, behaviors, and relationships in the digital era
At the same time, the group highlighted the positive power of technology — how it can be used to raise awareness, report abuse, seek help, and advocate for safer communities.

The Power of Peer Support in Digital Safety
A key outcome of the discussion was the recognition of the important role peers play in protecting one another online. Participants emphasized that young people must:
- Speak up when they see online abuse
- Support victims rather than blaming them
- Share accurate information on digital safety
- Promote respectful digital behavior within their networks
The young women also discussed responsible use of smartphones, tablets, and laptops, stressing the importance of privacy, safe sharing, and critical thinking to avoid digital harm.
Building a GBV-Free Digital Future
This Focus Group Discussion was not just a conversation — it was a step toward building a safer, GBV-free digital space led by informed and confident young women. The participants left with increased awareness, practical knowledge, and renewed commitment to becoming digital safety ambassadors in their communities.
This activity reflects CODEWA’s broader vision of using education, dialogue, and youth leadership to tackle GBV and empower young people to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.
At CODEWA, we believe that when young women are informed, empowered, and supported, they become powerful agents of change. Through regular dialogues, mentorship, and community engagement, we continue to invest in building resilient, confident, and digitally safe youth.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all the young women who bravely shared their voices and to everyone who continues to support our mission of creating safe, inclusive, and empowered communities.
