CODEWA Contributes to National Efforts to Strengthen Malaria Community-Led Monitoring
From July 13–27, 2024, Community Development Watch (CODEWA) proudly participated in a two-week national workshop organized by the Ministry of Health through the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). This workshop marked an important step in developing Tanzania’s framework for Malaria Community-Led Monitoring (CLM)—a strategy aimed at strengthening community systems and improving malaria services at all levels.

Advancing Community Health Through Collaboration
CODEWA’s participation reflects the growing trust placed in our organization as a community-focused partner working to improve the wellbeing of children and families. Alongside government representatives, experts, and other civil society actors, we contributed to discussions and planning processes centered on:
- Designing the national CLM framework
- Strengthening community-based monitoring systems
- Ensuring malaria services are accessible, high-quality, and rights-based
- Addressing gender and equity considerations in malaria interventions
This engagement deepened our understanding of how communities can meaningfully shape health service delivery and accountability mechanisms.
Why CLM Matters for Children and Education
Malaria remains one of the biggest barriers to children’s learning, school attendance, and overall wellbeing. By supporting efforts to reduce malaria prevalence, CODEWA is also advancing its broader mission to create environments where children and youth can learn, grow, and thrive without preventable disruptions.
Through this workshop, we gained important insights on:
- How community-led structures can identify malaria challenges early
- Ways to work with health facilities to co-create solutions
- Tools for monitoring quality, access, and equity in malaria services
These lessons will directly strengthen CODEWA’s community health initiatives and help us contribute more effectively to local malaria prevention efforts.
Strengthening Our Commitment to Health and Community Empowerment
Participating in the CLM workshop reinforced CODEWA’s belief that healthy communities create stronger foundations for learning and development. The knowledge and skills acquired will help us:
- Support community-driven health accountability
- Advocate for improved malaria services
- Integrate malaria awareness into our community programs
- Strengthen partnerships within the broader health sector
By contributing to a malaria-free future, we are investing in the long-term success and resilience of the children and youth we serve.

Looking Ahead
CODEWA is honoured to have been included in this national initiative. We look forward to applying the CLM framework within our community programs and collaborating with local health partners to advance Tanzania’s malaria response.
➡ Together, we can build healthier communities—and unlock better futures for every child.
