From April to August 2021, Community Development Watch (CODEWA) conducted a series of Mentorship and Inspiration Seminars<\/strong> focused on building resilience among children and youth. These sessions were part of our ongoing commitment to nurturing the next generation through education, mentorship, and psychosocial support. Over ten weeks, participants explored essential life skills, learned to overcome challenges, and developed a growth mindset to face both academic and personal obstacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Week 1: Embracing Resilience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey began by teaching children how to bounce back from adversity. Participants learned that failure is a necessary component of growth and success. Through guided activities, they explored how perseverance, persistence, and positivity enable them to approach challenges confidently and optimistically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Week 2: Emotional Awareness and Self-Regulation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resilient children understand and manage their emotions. In this week\u2019s seminar, participants explored self-regulation strategies, learning to cope with fear, sadness, or frustration without letting these emotions hinder their progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Week 3: Empathy and Understanding Others<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children practiced recognizing and respecting others\u2019 feelings. By developing empathy, they learned to build stronger, supportive relationships, which are essential for resilience in social and academic settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Week 4: Flexible Thinking<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This session focused on helping children create alternative plans (Plan B) and consider others\u2019 perspectives. Flexible thinking equips children to adapt to unexpected situations, make better decisions, and strengthen problem-solving skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Week 5: Impulse Control<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using the \u201cStop\u2013Think\u2013Respond\u201d strategy, participants explored impulse control. By learning to pause before reacting, children were taught to apply judgement and respond thoughtfully in challenging situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Week 6: Growth Mindset and Mastery Learning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children were guided to approach learning with a \u201cmastery\u201d mindset. This week emphasized goal-setting, seeking help when needed, learning from mistakes, and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Week 7: Optimism<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Focusing on positive thinking, children reflected on case studies and personal examples to develop optimism. They learned that focusing on the good, even in difficult circumstances, leads to better engagement, problem-solving, and overall happiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Week 8: Self-Efficacy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This session aimed to instill a strong sense of personal achievement. Children learned to use successes in one area of life as evidence of their ability in others, fostering self-confidence and belief in their own potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Week 9: Goal-Setting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seminar emphasized the importance of setting goals. Children learned how establishing a sense of purpose guides decision-making, builds independence, and encourages perseverance\u2014skills essential for long-term success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Week 10: Celebration and Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the ten weeks, participants not only learned valuable life skills but also practiced applying them in everyday scenarios. Each session reinforced CODEWA\u2019s mission to empower children and youth to overcome challenges, develop resilience, and thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
