Empowering Students Through Academic Resilience: CODEWA’s February Seminars

In February 2023, Community Development Watch (CODEWA) deepened its commitment to nurturing disadvantaged students by conducting Academic Resilience Seminars at Town School Primary School and Mabatini Primary School. These seminars aim to equip students with essential life skills, strengthen their ability to overcome challenges, and foster a mindset that supports long-term academic success. By providing guidance, mentorship, and practical tools, CODEWA helps students build the resilience needed to navigate educational and personal challenges with confidence.

Fostering Key Skills for Success
The seminars focused on empowering students to:

  • Consistently attend classes – emphasizing the importance of regular participation in their learning journey
  • Adapt to new environments – helping them manage change and feel confident in unfamiliar situations
  • Balance school and home responsibilities – teaching practical strategies for managing academic and family obligations
  • Take on challenging tasks – encouraging persistence, problem-solving, and a growth mindset
  • Set and adjust goals effectively – guiding students to create realistic, achievable objectives for academic improvement

Through interactive exercises, discussions, and mentorship activities, students actively engaged with these topics, gaining practical knowledge and confidence to apply them in their daily lives.

Collaborative Efforts and Community Engagement
The success of these seminars would not have been possible without the support of school management teams, local government representatives, and the broader community. Their partnership ensured that students participated in a safe and supportive environment, reinforcing CODEWA’s vision of collaborative, community-centered education initiatives.

Linking to CODEWA Programs
These seminars are a direct extension of CODEWA’s Éducation and Mentorship programs. By building academic resilience, the organization not only improves students’ educational outcomes but also instills confidence, perseverance, and life skills critical for their personal growth and future success. In line with CODEWA’s holistic approach, these seminars also complement Inspiration and Youth Empowerment initiatives, creating well-rounded learners who are prepared to thrive in school and beyond.

Impact and Outcomes
Through these sessions, students are expected to:

  • Increase classroom attendance and participation
  • Develop stronger coping strategies for academic and personal challenges
  • Improve focus, motivation, and engagement in learning activities
  • Gain practical tools for goal-setting and time management

The ripple effects of these seminars extend beyond the classroom, supporting families and communities as children gain confidence and motivation to pursue better educational opportunities.

Perspectives d’Avenir
CODEWA plans to expand these seminars to additional schools, reaching more disadvantaged students throughout the region. By scaling these initiatives, the organization aims to ensure that all children—regardless of their background—can access the knowledge, mentorship, and support needed to succeed academically and socially.

How You Can Support
Every contribution helps CODEWA provide training materials, mentor support, and resources for students and schools. By supporting these programs, donors help create lasting change: stronger learners, empowered youth, and more resilient communities.

Join CODEWA in building academic resilience—empower students, strengthen communities, and invest in a brighter future.
