Hope in Every Step: Walking Together for Mental Health Awareness
Mental health remains one of the most pressing issues affecting youth worldwide. While often overlooked, emotional well-being is deeply connected to a young person’s ability to learn, grow, and achieve their dreams. This weekend, CODEWA proudly joined the Hope in Every Step walk in Columbus, Ohio — a powerful event focused on raising awareness around mental health and suicide prevention among young people.
Represented by Sadath Mwamsema, CODEWA walked alongside families, educators, and advocates to honor those affected by mental health struggles and to promote open conversations that lead to healing and hope.

Why Mental Health Matters for Youth
Mental health challenges affect how children and young people think, feel, and engage with the world around them. Left unaddressed, these challenges can limit opportunities, affect relationships, and hinder their potential. But with care, understanding, and community support, every child can thrive.
At CODEWA, we believe that empowering young people begins with creating safe environments where they feel seen, heard, and supported. Participating in this event strengthened our commitment to ensuring that every child in Tanzania has the opportunity to overcome challenges and pursue their dreams — free from stigma and silence.
Lessons and Reflections from the Walk
Sadath’s goal in attending the Hope in Every Step walk was to learn how communities in the United States unite around mental health issues and to explore how similar models can be adapted back home.
“I was deeply moved by how openly people shared their personal stories,” Sadath reflected. “That courage creates solidarity, and it breaks the stigma surrounding mental health. It showed me the power of community compassion.”
The event also provided an opportunity to connect with several partner organizations and individuals working in mental health advocacy and youth empowerment. Their approaches — from storytelling to peer-support networks — offered valuable insights for community-based initiatives in Tanzania.
Bringing Hope Back Home
CODEWA aims to apply the lessons learned by:
- Encouraging open dialogue in schools and communities about mental health.
- Establishing youth clubs and peer-support spaces where young people can talk freely and safely.
- Partnering with local NGOs, health experts, and educators to promote awareness and strengthen community well-being.
- Organizing community walks and campaigns to inspire collective action — just like Hope in Every Step.
Through these efforts, we can continue building a society where every child and youth is inspired and empowered to achieve their dreams.
A Step Toward a Healthier Future
Every step taken in Columbus was more than just a walk — it was a symbol of unity, hope, and shared humanity. CODEWA’s participation reaffirmed our belief that change begins when people come together for a purpose larger than themselves.
Together, we can break the silence around mental health and create a world where every young person feels valued, supported, and understood. 💚
